Acireale is a baroque town on the east coast of Sicily, 20 km above Catania. The city has beautiful sights such as churches, museums, theaters and squares. Acireale is famous for its ice cream specialties. For example, the granita; a kind of sorbet in several flavors, in combination with a brioche. The Sicilians eat it often for breakfast and lunch in the warm summer months. Acireale is near the so-called Cyclopecoast. In the water you can see lava rocks rising out of the water. According to a legend, these are pieces of rock which the Cyclops Polyphemus (a monstrous creature from the caves of Mount Etna) Odysseus hurled at his head, because he had blinded the Cyclops.   Along this coastline are still more villages, such as the fishing village of Aci Castello (5 km). The castle is situated above the sea, you can visit it. In the castle you can admire archaeological collections. But also a trip to the Etna should not be left out. On the south side of the volcano, you can rise with a cable car. Led by a guide, you can further continue the tour. For a day at the beach you can go to Aci Trezza (2 km).
